Burdock has been known as a powerful medicinal purifier, immune booster and edible root vegetable since antiquity. Native to Europe and Asia, Burdock, Arctium lappa, is now naturalized worldwide yet unfortunately thought of as a common roadside and garden weed by many in the U.S.

The major action of burdock is its beneficial effects on the performance of organs for elimination and purification-primarily the liver, stomach and colon.  Several studies have shown that with continued use, burdock can help protect the liver from the damaging effects of Acetaminophen and alcohol over use.  Burdock is an effective diuretic cleanser extracting toxins from the blood and kidneys eliminating them through the urine. Its anti-inflammatory action can help alleviate headaches and minor aches & pains.

Burdock is used topically as a treatment for skin problems such as acne, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis  and skin spots.  The beneficial oils in Burdock helps to moisturize and nourish skin.  Some natural hand sanitizers contain burdock for its natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.

There are also many nutritional benefits of consuming burdock.   Burdock  contains potassium, iron, magnesium, manganese, calcium, zinc, selenium, phosphorus, folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, and  vitamins C and E.

Burdock is one of the 4 main herbs in the Essiac tea blend, which is an alternative cancer treatment.  In Russia and Indian, Burdock is currently used in oncology for its cancer curing properties.  Pregnant women should not use Burdock, and those with low iron and potassium should limit its use.

We have many tea blends that contain Burdock- for immune building, detoxification and “weight loss”- at Ubi’s South Sound’s Premier Tea, Herb and Spice Merchant.  Questions about Burdock? Email at herbalelements@comcast.net.
